Cf. Šlióžas, Šliožė, Šliožỹs (see). The origin is not entirely clear. Perhaps to be connected with lit. slide „kas nusigyvenęs, apsileidęs“, slide „skursti“ (LKŽK) or similar. Although these surn. slug- can also be from slug- (see Slugs).
