Būdvietis

The older distribution area of ​​the surnames Bū̃dvietis and Bū̃dvytis (see) is very defined: southwest of the line Klaipėda, Endriejavas, Laukuva, Šilalė, Vainutas, Šilutė. (Bū̃dvytis from Joniškis and Kaunas can easily be explained by the migration of surnames.) Most of them (93 out of 107) are from the dialects of Dūnininkai (73) and Donininkai (20). All surnames are from the Dūnininkai dialect, which instead of lk. ie has ī, they are officially written Bū̃dvytis (in the dialect and pronounced). Pvt. from the Donininkai dialect, basically from the former Klaipėda region, off. in German they were spelled differently, usually Budwetis, Budweht. These inscriptions, of course, reflect the dialectal pronunciation: Boudvėtis. Hence, the same surname is pronounced Bū̃dvytis by the Dūninkai, and Bū̃dvētis by the Doninkai. So the literary version of this surn. gender should be Dual, cf. Būdwietis ¹. Its origin is not entirely clear, but it can be suspected that it is a conjuration, the first word of which may be connected with lit. way, and the second - with vietà, cf. Dvárvytis
